12. SUGGESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

The audit generated much interest and debate on a wide variety of topics which were outwith the scope of the project. Many of these would have required a formal research application with ethical committee approval to address issues of patient involvement and confidentiality. It is to be hoped that the questions asked will form the basis for further research on:

• the validity of the consent process
• the effectiveness of different treatment protocols
• the effectiveness of different electrode placement
• the use of EEG monitoring in routine clinical practice
• the choice of anaesthetic agent
• long term relapse rate
• long term side-effects
